Are Celebrities a Waste of Space

Yes

I wanted to end this article with just the one word, but my editor insisted that I expand a little, so here goes.

In the good-old-days, famous people were famous because of their inherent qualities. For example, musicians were famous because they were good at producing music. Alas, those days are a dim memory for most people. Now-a-days, people consume any old crap that is shoved down their throats (or more correctly, in their ears). I'm not saying that there weren't any crap bands in the past, just that the popularity of the good bands overshadowed the dross. The Beatles weren't famous because they were good looking (have you looked at pictures of Ringo?), or because of vacuous dance routines. No, what they lacked in blandness, was outweighed by their combined musical genius.

Celebrity isn't the same as fame. A celebrity is somebody you care about, only because other people care about them. If they stopped being a celebrity, you would cease to care. On the other hand, there are people that you care about because of their inherent qualities, or because of there efforts. Alas, it is a sad state of affairs that I find it difficult to think of somebody in the limelight solely because of their quality, and not because of their celebrity.

Next time you read a tabloid newspaper comic (I can't call them newspapers), think about why you care about the latest bland, stupid, worthless bimbo who flashed her tits in a nightclub. If you want to make your life better, do something interesting, and talk about it with friends and family. Don't waste you time talking about celebrities.
